Removing sensitive data from SQL Server DB -

we have data stored in encrypted fields (with sql server encryption) in our database , have requirement able remove records our database under peculiar conditions spare you. has been noted dba nulling out data potentially still leaves residual data in file potentially recovered.

it has been suggested in team (rather nulling) write '*' each character want remove delete record, , assert wipe data if gets hold of mdf file value won't retrievable (because bits have been overwritten). example if have value "abc" run update statement replaces value '***'. delete record.

can confirm if case? i'm skeptical, i'm developer , not dba isn't area of specialty me.
