SQL Server licensing for test environments -


i work medical software company, , provide sql server 2008 r2 runtime license our clients packaged our software. of our clients either clinics or hospitals. being medical industry every client has testing environment test our new releases first , put in production.

i know sql server developer edition free of year developing , test environments. developer edition obtainable via vsde (visual studio dev essentials) program available developers. 

so problem our clients aren't developers, how can setup test environment using cheapest options(preferably free). can apply vsde, , provide developer edition our clients?

you can sign up. additionally can use express it's super limited. doesn't come sql agent i'm sure you'll need. each version of sql (2008 / 2012 / 2016) has own licensing rules sure reach on each. example developer 2016 free not 2012. can super confusing , how many people wind paying money during microsoft audits.

so depends on need. version, etc or running in compatibility mode enough? many options depending on use case.

also, developer 2016 can't use in production, ever. if put production data on testing can't keep there technically. must remove after testing.
