there no need handle customcolumndisplay text event handler extract first letter of "companyname" value. instead, set gridcolumn.groupinterval property "companyname" gridcolumn "alphabetical". instance:

mygridview.columns("companyname").groupinterval = columngroupinterval.alphabetical
